Six Awarded for Excellence at the Cave Hill Campus

A prolific psychology researcher and an accomplished medical practitioner, are among the six recipients of the 2019 Principal’s Award for Excellence at The UWI Cave Hill Campus.

During Cave Hill’s Annual Staff Awards and Retirees Ceremony held on November 23, Professor Donna-Maria Maynard was honoured for Outstanding Research Accomplishments while lecturer in Clinical Pharmacology, Dr. Kenneth Connell, who holds an exhaustive list of local, regional and international positions, was recognised for Outstanding Public Service.

Dr. Jennifer Hurley and Mrs Veronica Jones were awarded for Outstanding Service to the Campus Community while Dr. Yolande Cooke and Mr. Chelston Lovell were recognised for Outstanding Service to the Campus and University Community.

Professor Maynard has taught psychology and counselling in the Caribbean for the past 19 years and provides research and clinical supervision for psychologists and counsellors in training

Over the past five years, she has published 28 pieces of scholarship of which 13 were refereed journal articles, three non-refereed journal articles, three technical reports, one encyclopedia article and eight online publications. Her research focuses on three overlapping strands of psychology – clinical, counseling and educational, with emphasis on adolescents and emerging adults, identity development, sexuality, psychological assessment and psycho-educational issues affecting students and teachers.

Dr Connell serves on numerous organisations and institutions, including as an Invited Fellow of the American College of Physicians, Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, Invited Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, Fellow of the International Society of Hypertension, Associate Consultant and Consultant in charge of the Hypertension Clinic at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

He also chairs the Barbados Drug Formulary Committee, is a member of the Barbados Medical Council and the Healthy Caribbean Coalition and has served as President of the non-profit Heart and Stroke Foundation of Barbados since 2017.

At the university, he chairs the Principal’s Task Force for International Outreach for the Faculty of Medical Sciences as well as the Cave Hill Campus/University of Ghana Transnational programme articulation agreement committee.

Dr. Hurley has been Administrative Assistant in the Centre for Resource Management and Environmental Studies (CERMES) since 2008, having started off as a Secretary in 1990. She is well-respected for her administrative and financial acumen, and renowned for her support of that department’s very active applied research, development and outreach programme. She is often acclaimed for her ease in adapting to and discharging complex project requirements.

Mrs Jones’ appointment to the Nita Barrow Unit of the Institute for Gender and Development Studies in 2015 was seen as her return to the realm of gender relations, having started her career at the Women and Development Unit in 1982. Described as a consummate administrator and event planner, she has been instrumental in astutely managing funds for research and outreach projects, some of which are regional in scope, addressing juvenile justice, civil society organisation strengthening and gender and infrastructure.

Dr Cooke joined the UWI Office of Planning and Development in 2012 and, since 2014, has held the post of Programme Officer in the Office of the Principal, Cave Hill Campus. She has been pivotal to the successful execution of several major events and projects and currently has oversight of a committee established to seek funding for the revitalization of the Faculty of Science and Technology. She was lauded for her attention to detail, foresight and going beyond the call of duty in her undertakings.

Since joining the Campus as Communications Officer in 2004, Mr. Lovell has been credited for his successful oversight of the growth and transformation of the Office of Public Information and drastically improving the Campus’ public profile. He has successfully secured sustained media and public focus on The UWI’s activities and achievements, ensuring constructive UWI records of accomplishments are effectively communicated to the public. In August, he was promoted to the post of Director, Office of Marketing and Communications.

Approximately 100 employees were recognized for their long service to the campus, in categories ranging from 15 to 40 years, while the University bade farewell to 17 who retired from the institution.
