A University for the Future

The UWI Student Guilds host panel discussion in Chancellor’s Week 2018

The four campuses of The University of the West Indies (The UWI) will stage a thought-provoking panel discussion during Chancellor’s Week, carded for July 23-29, 2018. The event themed “A University for the Future – UWI then, UWI now, UWI to come” is one of eight events being hosted in celebration of the University’s anniversary and legacy of “70 years of service, 70 years of leadership”.

It takes place at The UWI Mona Campus’ Faculty of Law Lecture Theatre, beginning at 6:00 pm on Thursday, July 26, 2018. The free event, which targets students and the public, will be led by young leaders from The UWI and other spheres.

The special panel, hosted by Krystal Tomlinson, Past Vice-President of the Mona Guild of Students and Roger Bent, Past President of the Mona Guild of Students, will feature Howard Brown, immediate Past President of the Open Campus Guild of Students; Kai Bridgewater, immediate Past President of the Cave Hill Campus Guild of Students; Debbie Bissoon, media personality, marketing and public relations consultant; and Raymond Pryce, former Member of Parliament – discussing the direction of the university, their opinions on the way forward and opportunities, lessons learned and partnerships formed at The UWI.

According to current President of the Guild of Students at Mona, Shevon Williams, “The University of the West Indies is perfectly positioned to become the premier learning institution that satisfies the needs of the tertiary students within the region. It is our hope that through this forum, we may unearth ideas and spark discussions that will lead to the advancement of the University. This is in alignment with our vision for the future, as the Guild’s motto states, Together We Can Make It Happen.”

Other events planned during Chancellor’s Week include a Welcome Gala Reception at Jamaica House on July 23; Nostalgic Conversations on July 24; Pelican Awards on July 25; One UWI Festival and T20 Cricket Match on July 27; Pelican All White Breakfast Party and B4 Summer Ends Cooler Fete on July 28; and the Chancellor’s Jazz Farewell on July 29.
