Launch of the 16th Biennial Inter-Campus Staff Games

The University of the West Indies (UWI) formally launched the 16th Biennial Inter-Campus Staff Games on Wednesday 6th June, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. JA /11:00a.m. EC time. The launch took place at The UWI Open Campus in Grenada and was streamed live via Zoom video-conferencing, with more than 140 staff members tuning in.

The Games which will be held from July 6–15, 2018 and hosted by the Open Campus are expected to see over 300 members of UWI faculty and staff to the Spice Isle of Grenada. This UWI tradition which began in 1988 provides an opportunity for all levels of staff to engage in friendly competition, fostering closer integration across the regional university. It lasts 10 days and includes football, basketball, volleyball, netball, cricket, lawn and table tennis, and athletics.

This year’s Games also feature a number of historic firsts; it will be the first time that the games are held outside The UWI’s three physical campuses. Grenada was selected as the island is set to be the future location of key developments for the new UWI Faculty of Sport.

Commenting on the launch of the Games Principal Longsworth said, “hosting the Games is tangible evidence of The UWI’s commitment to its new Strategic Plan of which a key element is staff engagement and the forging of a motivated team.” She added that “The UWI Staff Games allow us to build relationships across the region and to bring together our UWI community in a united way, despite the heated inter-campus competition in the varying sports.
