Only needy UWI students to get special relief, Reid reiterates
Education Minister Ruel Reid is this afternoon reiterating that only final year students at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona who have been deemed needy by the university and the Guild of Students or have applied for help through the Students’ Loan Bureau (SLB) or Jamaica Values and Attitudes (JAMVAT) programme will receive special relief to clear outstanding arrears.
Reid last week said that some $86 million is currently owed by 618 final year UWI Mona students. An agreement was subsequently made between the ministry and the university for students who were barred due to outstanding school fees to sit their exams.
The minister is, however, reminding that the agreement will only benefit needy students.
An education ministry release said this afternoon that Reid wrote to UWI Principal Archibald McDonald to underscore that students should be allowed to sit their final exams subject to their application being approved under proposed relief arrangements. Read more
