One UWI Festival & T20 Match for Chancellor’s Week 2018
A culinary and entertainment festival and T20 cricket match are among the highlights of the upcoming Chancellor’s Week hosted by The University of the West Indies (The UWI).
Carded for Friday, July 27, 2018, this free public event at the Mona Bowl celebrates the diverse cultures of the four UWI campuses in food, sport and music. It also features a children’s village with games and activities, as well as all-day access to the Bowl’s Olympic sized swimming pool, creating a fun day for the entire family.
An exciting T20 cricket match, which begins at 1:00 p.m. will see a Chancellor’s XI play against the Young Pelicans (a team comprised of students). Among the player line-up for the Chancellor’s XI are Chadwick Walton, notable batsman for both the West Indies and the Caribbean Premier League’s Jamaica Tallawahs teams; Paul Palmer, Jamaica’s former national (senior) cricket team captain; and Wavell Hinds, UWI alumnus and former West Indies player. Meanwhile, the Young Pelicans team will include members of the reigning national senior cup champion team, the likes of Michael Frew, former Jamaica and West Indies U-19 all-rounder and former captain of the Jamaica U-19 team; Oshane Walters, former Jamaica U-19 captain; Romain Morris, Jamaica Scorpions’ wicket keeper; and Nicholas Walters, former U-19 Jamaica cricket team member.
Speaking on the event, Dean of The UWI Faculty of Sport, Dr. Akshai Mansingh, who is the lead-organizer of the T-20 match, says, “We see Sport as an integrator in the region. It is symbolic that the Faculty of Sport, established in our 70th year as a cross-campus faculty, is in keeping with the One UWI spirit. The emergence of combined UWI teams, in which the best talent from all the campuses come as one to display our true strength, further strengthens this spirit.”
Other events during Chancellor’s Week include a welcome gala reception at Jamaica House on July 23; Nostalgic Conversations on July 24; Pelican Awards on July 25; Pelican Projections Panel Discussion on July 26; Pelican All White Breakfast Party and B4 Summer Ends Cooler Fete on July 28; and the Chancellor’s Jazz Farewell on July 29. Proceeds from Chancellor’s Week will go to The UWI Regional Endowment Fund (UWIREF) to support undergraduate and graduate students, research and other developmental projects. Sponsors of the week of activities include Jamaica Pegasus Group, Carreras, RJR Gleaner Communications Group, Sagicor Group, Ramsons, Tastee, Wisynco, Courtleigh Group, CariMed, Caledonia Outdoor Advertising, Jamaica Broilers, Phase 3, Patoo and UWItv.
