Records aplenty as Olympians strut stuff at UWI Invitational Meet
Triple jumper Shanieka Thomas was among a number of Olympians that produced creditable performances as the records were aplenty at The University of the West Indies (UWI) Invitational Meet at the UWI/Usain Bolt Stadium on Saturday.
Thomas, now sporting her married name Ricketts, leapt to a season opening mark of 14.20 metres in a negative 0.1 metres per second wind speed. She won ahead of her UWI teammates Tamara Myers (14.02m) and Natrena Hooper (12.26m).
Though the performance was nowhere close to her personal best and meet record leap of 14.57m, achieved last year at the same meet, the 25-year-old Thomas-Ricketts was pleased with the opener.
“This was my season opener and 14.20m is well over the qualification standard for World Championships, so I am ok with it. It is a different season working on different things, and it is also early in the season, so we still have a lot of things to work on,” the 5ft 9in tall jumper told journalists. Read more
