The UWI launches Quality Policy

The University of the West Indies (UWI) Board for Undergraduate Studies is pleased to launch The UWI Quality Policy on February 19, 2018 at 3 p.m. (Jamaica time) at the Ramson Meeting Room, The UWI Regional Headquarters.

The policy to be officially introduced during next week’s University Meetings, begins a programme of wide-ranging engagement to ensure the highest quality in our daily interactions with our stakeholders. The Quality Policy supports the achievement of The UWI’s mission and vision and facilitates its continuing institutional and programme accreditation.

Approved by the University’s Finance and General Purposes Committee (F&GPC) in February 2017, the Quality Policy is designed to strengthen the quality of The UWI’s processes, products, and services. While traditionally, The UWI regulations have served as a quality assurance mechanism in several UWI spaces, the policy was birthed out of the University’s recognition of the importance of increased attention to quality assurance for administrative processes and the need for better integration with its quality assurance for academic programmes. This will allow us to serve all of our stakeholders better. The Quality Policy therefore represents an important instrument for deepening The UWI’s quality culture and developing its Quality Management System (QMS). It provides a comprehensive definition of quality that comprises the critical dimensions of fitness of purpose; fitness for purpose; value for money; transformative development of students and staff; and adherence to high standards, including service quality. The Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) continuous improvement cycle presents a systematic approach to Quality Management, in keeping with the University’s strategic direction.

With support from the Quality Assurance Unit (QAU), we hope that all UWI stakeholders will become familiar with The UWI Quality Policy, and will consider and work on the promotion of quality in accordance with the policy.

Policy implementation, led by the Board for Undergraduate Studies, alongside the Board for Graduate Studies and Research, begins with a series of orientation and training activities to facilitate a sense of ownership of The UWI Quality Policy on the part of staff and students.
