TT campus crowned cricket champs at UWI Games

St. Augustine defended a low score of 112 for nine to defeat Cave Hill by 34 runs and be crowned champions at The UWI Games 2017 which concluded yesterday in Barbados.

At the 3W’s Oval, Cave Hill Blackbirds won the toss and sent in St. Augustine Pelicans to bat and they would have been pleased to chase 113 for victory.

The top scorer for the Pelicans was TT Red Force player Yannick Ottley with 39 runs from 44 balls including four boundaries.

He showed his experience as he steadied the innings but could only get contributions from Andy Gorbin (16) and Amir Jangoo (13) as the St Augustine batting stuttered.

Nicholas Kirton (3/12) was economical and took regular wickets to stiffle the Trinidad Campus. He was aided by Cameron Pennyfeather (2/12) and Jermaine Levy (2/34) The Blackbirds innings didn’t start as planned due to some good fast bowling from Bryan Charles (3/14) who took early wickets.

Jovan Ali continued his good form with the ball as he had figures of (3/19).

The Pelicans were sharp and disciplined in the field which resulted in three runouts including the final wicket to rout their rivals for 77 and seal the victory. The main run contributors in the paltry total for the host campus were Shane Moseley (23) and David Carter (14).

In the last game of the tournament, St. Augustine male football team got their first victory against Open Campus with a first half double from Shaquille Stewart. Read more
