UWI Guild 'pleased' over passing of marriage bill
The UWI Guild of Students says it’s pleased that good sense prevailed in the Senate on Tuesday night with the passing of legislation to raise the legal age of marriage to 18.
The Bill was passed with a simple majority with a vote of 23 in support and 5 abstentions. There were no votes against the passing of the legislation.
In a brief statement on Wednesday, the Guild says it is unfortunate that some members opted not to support the legislation, but states that it is of the view that the Bill will chart a new way forward for children living in Traditional Societies across Trinidad and Tobago.
It says that it believes in freedom of choice and children should not be condemned to traditional practices such as child marriage.
The Guild says it looks forward to the outcome of the debate in the House of Representatives and encourages all Parliamentarians to let good sense prevail. Read more
